Gisell Del Carmen grew up in Maywood, a city in Southeast Los Angeles. She grew up in the middle of violence, poverty, and people that have limited access to higher education. Her upbringing has shaped the way she views access to opportunity and legal resources. In her community, lawyers are seen as people that cannot be trusted because they take advantage of the poor. Gisell wants to change that paradigm. She wants to become a lawyer so that she can use her knowledge to help create a socially just space for her community and for future generations. After passing the California Bar Exam, she plans on opening her own law firm and offering a wide range of services to her community ranging from immigration, employment, worker’s compensation, and personal injury law. Gisell is a 1L student at Southwestern Law School.
