Legal Impact for Chickens focuses on civil litigation as a way to improve animal welfare and reform the poultry industry to improve conditions for poultry workers, contract growers, and animals. Ninety-seven percent of the 160 million chickens consumed weekly nationwide are produced through “contract” farming, a financially exploitative process in which an individual farmer takes out large loans in order to raise chickens for a large poultry corporation. Most industry workers are people of color, many are women, and nearly one third are immigrants. LIC is committed to holding corporations accountable for cruelty on factory farms. They work to ensure that chickens and poultry workers receive the welfare protections that the law intends. Legal Impact for Chickens received $41,500 for funding in 2024.
